Is there an FBI file on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s CCP connections? If there is one, does it matter?
In an August 29 column at this very site about Walz’s semi-opposition to and longtime interaction with and enabling of the Chinese Communist Party, James Roth writes that Congress, which “is starting a Walz investigation…should first reach for the FBI file. Anyone with 30 or more trips to China has one, and it’s going to be rather large and surely filled with many interesting facts. Let’s learn about Mr. Walz.”
Seems plausible. Perhaps, in some parallel universe, the FBI of that universe has already handed the Investigative Committee of that universe a thick stack of documents full of many interesting facts.
Where’s the file?
But a funny thing happened on the way to the FBI briefing about Walz’s dealings with the Chinese Communist Party in our present universe. The FBI has erected a wall of silence. The FBI isn’t giving congressional investigators the time of day. It certainly hasn’t offered to brief anybody about anything pertaining to Walz’s decades-long relationship, by turns murky and way out in the open, with the Chinese Communist Party.
James Comer, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, has written another letter to “renew” its request, in Comer’s August 16, 2024 letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, “for all information, documents, and communications in the FBI’s possession related to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) connected entities and officials Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has engaged and partnered with” (“Comer: FBI’s Silence Regarding Governor Walz’s Relationship with CCP-Affiliated Entities and Officials is Inexcusable,” Committee press release, September 12, 2024).
Does the FBI understand its own previous briefings of the Oversight Committee?
Governor Walz has visited China, by his memory, roughly 30 times. During the 118th Congress, the Committee has investigated federal agencies’ responses to CCP influence and infiltration tactics, including the FBI’s own strategy. In July 2024, the FBI briefed the Oversight Committee on CCP influence operations. [This briefing is one of the reasons for concluding that] Governor Walz’s history with CCP-affiliates bears characteristics of CCP influence operations.
The press release quotes from Comer’s new letter to Wray:
“As recently as this year, Mr. Walz met with CCP Consul General Zhao Jian to discuss ‘China-U.S. relations and sub-national cooperation.’ Recent reports indicate Mr. Walz, while in Congress, ‘helped secure over $2 million’ and ‘pushed for a $5 million federal earmark’ for the Hormel Institute, which is a ‘Minnesota-based medical research center with a history of working with the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.’ The Hormel Institute has also worked with the Beijing Genomics Institute, ‘a group labeled by the Pentagon as a Chinese military company.’… The FBI told the Committee that the Bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force investigates this kind of CCP activity. The Committee is concerned that Mr. Walz’s involvement with Chinese entities and officials may have allowed the CCP to influence his decision-making as a congressman and governor and potentially would allow the CCP to influence the White House should Mr. Walz be elected vice president.”
Will the third letter say pretty please with sugar on top can we have the info on Walz?
Stop asking, Investigative Committee. Dial it up to eleven. Issue a subpoena. When the FBI disobeys, hold the agency in contempt and hold specific officials, like Wray, in contempt. Go to court. Hold press conferences and more press conferences. Issue press releases and more press releases. Demand an explanation of the coverup. Don’t wait four weeks between steps. Don’t wait four days.
