The Chinese Communist Party would never try to persuade popular Taiwanese singers to lip-sync anti-Taiwan propaganda in the run-up to the January 13, 2024 Taiwanese elections, would it (yes, it would)?
If you ask CCP spokesmen, they will be happy to tell you that the CCP never does any of the bad things of which it is regularly accused.
Battering at the boundaries of other countries and stealing their resources is really just resolute affirming of the primeval lineaments of Chinese territory, which embrace the entirety of the South China Sea and the entirety of the earth. Nor does the Chinese Communist Party ever engage in transnational repression consisting of intimidating, harassing, and kidnaping Chinese nationals; the purpose of the “police stations” it sets up in so many other countries is, rather, only to resolutely return stolen wallets and help little old ladies cross the street. As for the brainwashing, torture, and murder of Uyghurs in China’s modern concentration camps, no, what’s been happening in these luxury resorts is simply a little resolute educational training provided by CCP academies of lifelong learning; to experience the same kind of thing in the United States, just attend a class in Global Digital Equity Through Creativity at the New School.
And China’s long-planned by-hook-or-by-crook subjugation of Taiwan, a separate country that has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China? This is just a matter of resolutely welcoming “compatriots” into a “reunified” China, so no need for any fuss or “separatism.” Xi Jinping himself has said that the young people are the future and that the vista shared by everyone in true full China extent is one of great, glorious, correct, heroic happiness together for a brighter tomorrow in a spirit of ultimate theme-bringing of resolute national rejuvenation, national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and blah blah blah under a sunny cloudless sky.
As for the recent claim that, per Reuters, “China pressured a popular Taiwanese rock band to make pro-China comments ahead of Taiwan’s key elections next month, according to sources with knowledge of the situation and a Taiwan security note,” the Chinese government is dismayed and aggrieved. “Who, us? What? No way! Bu zhidao what you’re talking about…you’ve got us all wrong….”
China’s National Radio and Television Administration asked the band Mayday to publicly voice support for Beijing’s claims that democratically governed Taiwan is part of China, according to the internal Taiwan security note reviewed by Reuters.
The rock stars did not agree to China’s request to provide unspecified “political service”, a Taiwanese source with direct knowledge of the situation, who requested anonymity, added. The band’s management company did not respond to requests for comment.
After Reuters’ story on Mayday appeared earlier on Thursday, Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) criticised China, saying it again demonstrated how Beijing is trying to influence the vote….
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, more than 24 hours after Reuters sought comment from them, issued a statement carried by Taiwanese media saying the accusations the government pressured Mayday were “fake news” and that the DPP was spreading rumours.
“This is sinister and malicious political manipulation,” the office said, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, United Daily News and other outlets.
Yeah, okay, Taiwan Affairs Office. Whatever.

“ ‘The purpose [of the drills] is to resolutely combat the arrogance of Taiwan independence separatist forces and their actions to seek independence. The provocation of Taiwan independence continues all day long, and the actions of the People’s Liberation Army to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity are always ongoing. I hope that the majority of Taiwanese compatriots will clearly distinguish between right and wrong, resolutely oppose Taiwan independence, and work with us to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.’ ”
