What does China want in the Middle East? Some writers seem to think that the Chinese government is an innocent and perhaps confused bystander that wants only peace. In this instance at least, they feel, the totalitarian dictatorship is but a seeker of amity and good will between two peoples, Israel and Hamas, who somehow find themselves at war.
No government well-informed about recent events in Israel could have innocently proposed, in the name of peace, that Israel cease to act in self-defense and cease retaliating against Hamas, the aggressor of October 7, 2023 and on many previous occasions—and proposed this while prolifically condemning Israel and refraining from condemning Hamas.
But as reported by Steven Mosher and others, words—even malicious words—are not the only means by which the Chinese government has thrown in with Hamas, which wants Israel off the map. Weapons and other technology originating in China are one clue to the extent of its involvement. That the Israel Defense Forces have captured tunnel engineers from the People’s Liberation Army is another.
As reported by VOZ (“China allegedly aided Hamas in war against Israel,” July 6, 2024):
Dr. Guermantes Lailari, a researcher at National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taiwan and a former U.S. Air Force officer, has revealed that, according to his sources, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) captured at least two Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) tunnel engineers in Gaza….
Lailari claimed that the engineers captured by the Israelis were returned to China following pressure put on Jerusalem by Beijing.
The U.S. academic’s remarks were made as part of a webinar by international experts called The Chinese Communist Party’s Invasion of Israel: How Xi (leader of the Chinese Communist Party) Ignited the Middle East and Why.
Earlier, Lailari also noted that large quantities of advanced Chinese-made weapons had been found in Hamas tunnels during the war in Gaza. This fact was also covered by renowned Israeli journalist Amit Segal.
In an interview recently published on the China Unscripted podcast, Lailari said they found assault rifles, telescopic sights, advanced communications equipment, tactical radios and sophisticated explosives. According to the investigator, Beijing seems to be sending weapons directly to Hamas, without intermediaries.
China couldn’t very well deny that the PLA tunnel engineers were from China if it was demanding their return. Regarding the weapons, though, the Chinese government has made plain that it has no idea how how any Chinese-made weapons may be reaching Hamas.
The revelation about the tunnel engineers is not brand-new. On May 19, 2024, The Sunday Guardian reported that according to Lailari, “At least two tunnel engineers from China’s People’s Liberation Army were captured by the IDF, suggesting that extensive Chinese help was given to Hamas to construct the huge network of tunnels under Gaza city. Apart from this, PLA has been giving military training to the Hamas.”
And in November 11, 2023, NTDTV published a piece according to which, as Google-translated, “Taiwan media broke the news that the Chinese Communist Party sent engineering troops from Egypt into Gaza to help Hamas build a tunnel network. After Israel attacked Gaza, Hamas refused to release the engineering troops.”

Mosher: “Some in Hamas even have personal ties to China, such as Mohammed Deif, the terrorist leader reportedly responsible for the planning of the massacre. Chinese dissident journalist Lu De and others report that the PLO sent Deif to China in 1996, where the CCP enrolled him in the PLA’s Ordnance Engineering College in Shijiazhuang, China.”
