The Cato Institute recently awarded Jimmy Lai the Milton Friedman prize for his commitment to freedom. Lai has stood resolute even in the face of threats to his own freedom and fortune by the Chinese Communist authorities that are strangling the liberty of Hong Kong. According to Reuters, Lai was jailed in 2020 for “unlawful assembly” and the authorities have tacked on another 5-year sentence for a technical land lease violation.
The Acton Institute released a documentary, The Hong Konger, which tells of Jimmy Lai’s rise to success and how Hong Kong’s freedom enabled his entrepreneurial energy. It leads up to his role as an advocate for Hong Kong’s historic freedom and to his persecution by China’s government.
In addition to institutions bringing attention to Jimmy Lai’s cause, there is an organic movement of people across the world advocating for him and thereby the cause for which he is fighting.
On twitter @supportJimmyLai is one such meeting point.
@supportJimmyLai covered a recent exchange at the United Nations between Jimmy Lai’s son and a representative of Communist China:
The more we speak out for Jimmy Lai, the harder it is for the CCP to continue oppressing people who speak out against their totalitarian methods.
